Benjamin Franklin Hanby was born on December 5, 1863, in Wilmington, Delaware. he was the son of James Asheton Bayard and Martha C Kendall Hanby.

He had the following siblings: Mary Emma; Jesse K.; Charlotte Ann; Clara; James Asheton Bayard Jr; Arthur Stowell; and Charles M Hanby.

On December 31, 1884, Benjamin Franklin Hanby and Etta Jane Mask were married, with Pastor George C Neoham(?) officiating, at the Delaware Avenue Baptist Church, Wilmington, Delaware.

They had two daughters: Charlotte Yarnell Hanby and Martha Clayton Hanby.

He was also the grandfather of singer Kate Smith

WASHINGTON, Jan 24 - Benjamin F Hanby, 82, grandfather of Kate Smith, of radio fame, died yesterday of pneumonia at his home in nearby Arlington.

Mr. Hanby assisted in interior decorating of the White House during the Woodrow Wilson administration and prior to that time had been a Washington representative of the Baltimore Sun for 15 years. Funeral rites will be conducted Saturday with burial in Fort Lincoln Cemetery here.
