Eldest son of William Henry and Sallie Boyd Rowell Rowell. J. D. married (1) Dorothy Mae Ward, and (2) Anita Mary Davis.
After leaving school he attended barber school. He worked as a barber until he was drafted during WW II.
During the war he was sent to New Guinea for his entire stay. His job in the army was as a dental assistant. He did work as a barber on his off times, giving hair cuts to his fellow soldiers. This was a great way for him to make additional money.
J. D. worked at a Barber Shop in Palm Beach called the Lido, this was directly across the street from the ocean and in the same building as the Lido pool complex. After a while he left the Lido and bought another barber shop in Palm Beach he named "Rowell's Barber Shop". This was the largest shop in Palm Beach.
WEST PALM BEACH - Julius (J.D.) Rowell, 64, of 9 Rennie Street, West Palm Beach, passed away Saturday.
He is survived by four daughters, Rita Frank (Sid) of Charlotte, NC, Anita Rowell, Diana Deviney (Jerry) and Kathy Barry (Dennis), all of West Palm Beach; two brothers, Travis Rowell of Marion, SC and Donald Rowell of Charlotte, NC; five sisters, Thelma Jones of Columbia, SC, Raye McKissick of Florence, SC, Dorothy McMillan of Mullins, SC, Beulah Foxworth and Annie Mae Foxworth, both of Marion, SC; and 3 grandsons.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 18, at 10 a.m. at Mizell-Faville-Zern Southdale Chapel with Rev. David T. Brewer, pastor of Wagg Memorial United Methodist Church of West Palm Beach, officiating. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
