Fifth child of Louis LECONTE and Ann QUARTERMAN.Christened 3 Jun 1821. Married Harriett Nisbet of Athens, GA in 1846.
He had a remarkable mechanical talent and was known for making his own firearms. He like his father had an immense love of science and later kept a private chemical laboratory in his home. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1841. Member of the Phi Kappa Society. He later went to Cambridge and attended Harvard Law School. While in college, he joined the Presbyterian Church, and this faith he retained consistently through the rest of his life. Louis retuned to Georgia in June of 1843 and on the 25th of July of that year married Harriet Cooper Nisbet in Athens, GA. They moved to Savannah, GA where Louis practiced law for about 5 years. Then then relocated to Liberty County to devote his full time to being a planter on his plantation. He later accumulated some 4600 acres in Liberty County. He died suddenly in 1851 when he was shot and killed by the discharge from his own gun while riding in his buggy. However, there remained suspicion in the family that some the squatters who Louis had accused of theft may have played a part in his demise.

LEWIS LeCONTE JR. DEATH NOTICE: 1851
Mr. Lewis Le Conte, of Liberty County, Ga., was found dead near his plantation under circumstances which induce the belief that he was killed by the accidential discharge of his own gun. He was returning from Walthourville in his buggy in which he carried his fowling piece, and had reached the avenue of his plantation, where he was found dead, his horse having ran to the gate of his mansion.

Inscription of death year is incorrect. Louis ( Lewis ) died 20 October 1851, and not 1852, as evidenced a Bible record, by the date of the Savannah Republican Newspaper issue of Thursday, 23 October 1851 (p.2, c.1), NY Daily Times and estate records.
