Dr James Benedict was the son of Virgil Merrill and Lottie Mae (Fuller) Benedict. On July 15, 1951, he married Muriel Gertrude Goodell. They had five children. Dr. Benedict was a thoracic surgeon. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was also a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgery, the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs, and the Long Beach and Los Angeles Surgical Societies. He served as president of the American Physicians Art Association in 1976 and as its newsletter editor for 25 years. Even after he no longer served on the board, he continued as an active member and exhibited his artwork at the APAA's annual show. In 1977, he was elected Chief of Staf at Bauer Hospital, St. Mary Medical Center, Long Beach, CA. From about 1985-1990, he was Chief of Surgery at the same hospital.

When he finally retired form his busy practice as thoracic surgeon, he returned to college to hone his interest in fine art. He received a Beachelor of Fine Arts from California State University at Long Beach in June 1999 and a Master of Arts in 2002. In addition to art, he studied creative writing, especially poetry and fiction.
