George Edward Orth, age 93, formerly of 3309 Mero St., Manitowoc, went to meet his Savior and his beloved wife, Albena, on May 9, 2009, at River Wood Estates, Manitowoc.

George was born in Two Rivers on July 15, 1915, to the late Edward G. and Minnie (Lindenau) Orth. After school, George worked at various jobs, and was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp. from 1934-36. He married the former Albena Melichar on Oct. 6, 1937, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Manitowoc.

He worked at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company until 1945. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946 at Fort Lewis, Wash. After his honorable discharge, on June 15, 1946, he joined the Manitowoc Fire Department. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant on Jan. 1, 1957, captain on Jan. 1, 1965, and battalion chief on July 15, 1977. He retired on Jan. 12, 1978, as assistant chief. He was a member of the Firefighters Local Union 368.

George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed being a handyman and provider, fixing anything and everything for family and friends. He took pride in making anything from toys for his children to cabinets for the kitchen. George also enjoyed get-togethers with family and friends and was always ready for a game of pinochle.

He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law: Delvin and Mary Orth, Newton, David and Kathy Orth, Menominee, Mich., and one daughter and son-in-law: Dorothy and George Lambert, Oshkosh; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers- and sisters-in-law: Francis and Betty Orth, Manitowoc, John and Carolyn Orth, Wisconsin Rapids, one sister- and brother-in-law: Marian and Paul Skarvan, Manitowoc; four sisters-in-law: Rita Orth, Cato, Audrey Orth, Chilton, Helen Herrmann, Manitowoc, Mary Melichar, Manitowoc; one brother-in-law: Richard (Delores) Melichar, Manitowoc. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Albena, 12 brothers, three sisters, a grandson, a great-granddaughter, and his stepmother, Elizabeth Orth.

The funeral service for George will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen with entombment to follow at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc. The family will greet relatives and friends also on Wednesday, May 13, at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. The Pfeffer Funeral Home & All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

The family would like to extend thanks to all of the staff at River Wood Estates for the wonderful care that they gave to George. George was loved and respected by everyone who knew him, and his memory will live on with those who survive.
