Obituary for Edgar Baker, Sr.
Mr. Edgar Baker, Sr., 92, of Seymour, passed away Monday, December 9, 2019 at Seymour Crossing surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Seymour to the late Samuel W. and Nellie (Borders) Baker.
Funeral services will be at Voss & Sons Funeral Service on Friday, December 13th at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Steve Barrett officiating. The American Legion and V.F.W. will present the flag and taps following the service at Voss Chapel to honor Edgar's years of service and dedication to our country. Burial will follow at Clear Spring Cemetery.
Family and friends may call at Voss & Sons Funeral Service on Thursday 5 to 7 p.m. and on Friday after 12 noon until time of service.
On December 24, 1946, Edgar married Ishmael Miller at the parsonage of the Nazarene Church in Crothersville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1945-1947.
Mr. Baker was a member of The Point (First Church of the Nazarene) for many years where he took it upon himself to be first at church on Sunday's to be sure the Lords House was prepared for worship. He drove the church youth bus for 27 years and would make copies of the weekly sermon and transport them to shut ins. He was a hard worker and a great provider for his family. He worked at Cummins factory for 30 years and while there, he also farmed and was a special deputy for the Jackson County Sheriff's department. After retiring from Cummins, Edgar drove for Poynters from 1979-2013; while there he drove over 100,000 miles!
Edgar is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ishmael Baker; sons, Andy Baker, Douglas "Doug" Baker, Sr., Edgar "Butch" Baker, Jr.; daughter, Candice "Candy" Baker Sons; 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; infant sister, Thelma Jean Baker; sisters, Hazel Barrett, Flossie Maynard, Inez Lloyd, Violet Emmons; brother, Albert Baker.
