Margret Potts was the daughter of George & Jone (Unk) Potts who came from Llangurig, Montgomeryshire (now Powys) in Wales to the colonies in 1690. The 1654 Will of her 2nd gr-grandfather, Thomas Pott, was proved Sep 1661 and is extant. Thomas' daughter Anne Pott married John Pott (same surnames); his Will was dated 12 Feb 1672 was proved 21 May 1673 and is also extant. Both are on file with the Consistory Court in Bangor.

Margret's grandmother Elizabeth Pott(s) and aunts (Jane, Margret, Elizabeth) and uncles (Thomas, Jonas, David) came in 1683 as evidenced by a 7mo/Sep 12, 1684 land grant of 100 acres, 50 acres each, to Elizabeth Potts and her daughter Jane as their "headright". Margret's father George Potts and uncle John Potts remained in Wales where John was heavily persecuted and died by 1698; his 5 orphaned children came to the colonies in the ship 'William Galley' under the care of Friends David Powell + John Morris of Radnor. Upon their arrival, Anthony Morris and John Kinsey of Philad'a Mtg were instructed to "continue the care in putting out the orphaned children" by the Friends of Philadelphia Mtg in 1699 and 1700. The entries are extant.

In addition to daughter Margret, George + Jone Potts had at least two more daughters, possibly three (names unknown) who accompanied them. Family lore states George Potts died on the 1690 voyage to America and Jone Potts was with child upon arrival when daughter Margret was born.

Jone Potts was an ardent Quaker and midwife, and is mentioned as such in numerous Quaker Minutes of Abington and Germantown Preparative Mtgs. The family resided in the Philadelphia neighborhood where Jone Potts was a member and minister of Germantown Preparative Meeting.

On 1mo/Mar 1, 1712 Richard Cocks requested a Certificate from Newark Monthly Meeting (later called Kennet) in Relation to marriage to a friend belonging to the Abington Meeting. Thomas Wickersham & Wm Horne appointed to enquire into his clearness. On 2nd mo/Apr 5 1712 , Thomas Wickersham & William Horne made return to the Newark Monthly Meeting meeting that they find nothing against Richard Cox to obstruct, that he is clear in Relation to marriage and orders the Certificate he requested. The Abington Monthly Minutes, dated 3mo/May 26, 1712 has the following entry: "Whereas Richard Cox of Kennett Monthly meeting in ye County of New Castle, and Margaret Potts, having declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other; before two Monthly meeting, Enquiry being made by persons appointed and found clear from all others on ye account of marriage. Did accomplish their marriage in ye Unity of Friends as is signified by their Marriage Certificate". To date, I have not been able to locate the original marriage certificate.

I have never been able to identity the given name of this "sister Potts" or the child referred to in those minutes.
