Jone Unknown Potts was born in Wales, the date and exact location is unknown.

She married George Potts about 1684/85 in Wales, which date is estimated based on the obscure tradition of the couple having 3 daughters prior to 1690 with a 4th child born shortly after her arrival in the colonies. ["Coxes of Southeastern Pennsylvania, 1708-1978" by Pricilla L. C. Richardson, pg 49]

She, with her four daughters, settled in Germantown, where she supported her family by means of her profession, that of doctor or midwife, she having brought her diploma from England with her.

John Roberts of Chester County, blacksmith, made his will 7 mo 26, 1702. It was proven January 5, 1702-03 and recorded in Will-Book B. at page 251 at Philadelphia. He made a bequest to "friend Joan Potts, widow".

On 10 mo/Dec 13, 1700, Jone or Joan Potts signed the marriage certificate of Lewis Lewis of Newtown, Chester Cnty, bachelor, and Mary Powell, of Bristol Twp, Philadelphia Cnty, spinster. The witnesses were Mary's mother Gwen Powell, Lydia Harry, Sarah Shoemaker, Joan Pott, Catherine Morris and others. Jone's nephew, Thomas Potts and wife Martha (Keurlis) Potts, also appear among the witnesses.

NOTE: Mary Powell's grandfather, John Powell, died enroute to the colonies in 1698 on the ship William Galley. His Will was witnessed by Thomas Potts who was also a passenger with his minor siblings, Elinor, Mary, Margaret and John Potts, the 5 orphaned children of John Potts of Wales, all having come to the colonies under the care of David Powell & John Morris.

On 10mo/Dec 7, 1710, Jone Potts witnessed the marriage of Henry Cunrads & Catherine Streypers. Other witnesses were: Thomas & Martha (Keurlis) Potts, Peter & Elizabeth Keurlis (Martha's father & mother),

On 4mo/Jun, 24 1714, Jone Potts' name is among the signers to a certificate issued at Abington Mtg to Henry Cunnard and wife on 4mo/Jun 24, 1714.

Jone Potts signed the marriage certificate of Margaret Tyson and William Hallowell on 8mo/Oct 23, 1729. Margaret Tyson was the daughter of Mary Potts (wife of Matthias Tyson) and the grand-daughter of John Potts of Wales. (Jone was the sister-in-law of John Potts of Wales and aunt of Mary Potts-Tyson, making her the great-aunt of Margaret Tyson-Hallowell.

She signed the marriage certificate of Mary Tyson and Ellis Lewis on 10mo/Dec 18m 1729. Mary Tyson was the daughter of Mary Potts (wife of Mathias Tyson), and the grand-daughter of John Potts of Wales. (Jone was the sister-in-law of John Potts of Wales and aunt to Mary Potts-Tyson, making her the great-aunt of Mary Tyson-Lewis.

Her granddaughter, Sarah Cox, spinster, married George Burson of Providence on 9/Nov 7, 1731 at the home of John Jacobs in Perkiomen wherein Jone Potts signed as a witness with her son-in-law Richard Cox, father of Sarah. George Burson's sister Anne also signed with her husband Conrad Conrad and his sister-in-law Elizabeth Burson, wife of his brother William Burson. Among other witnesses were Sarah's aunt Hannah (Jenkins) Cox, wife of Sarah's uncle John Cox Jr; William & Elizabeth Burson (his brother & sister-in-law); Conrad & Ann Conrad (his sister & bro-in-law); Wm Heald (hus of Sarah's 1st cousin, Elizabeth, d/o Jonas Potts); Jno Hatfield, Sarah Hatfield (father with daughter Sarah who married Anthony Conrad, s/o Conrad & Anne-Burson-Conrad, George's sister).

Jone Potts died in 1740 and a Minute at Germantown dtd 2mo/Apr 21, 1740 writes: "By order of our preparative meeting for the Lott wherein Joan Potts house & lands is Lett to John White for one year beginning the 10th of ye 2nd month, 1740 he is to keep the fence in repair . . . Recorded by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Minutes: "In or about the year 1740, Died Joan Potts of Germantown; she had a few words by way of Testimony in meetings which was well received; being Innocent and exemplary in Life & Conversation; was buried at Germantown."

"She taught each of her daughters her profession, and her own skill was so highly valued that after she lost the use of her limbs she was frequently carried to the bedside of some suffering women to give counsel and advice."
