George Potts was born about 1662 in Nant-gwernog, Montgomeryshire (now Powys), Wales, the son of Thomas & Elizabeth (Unknown) Potts. There is no verification of his mother Elizabeth's maiden name and many have erroneously claimed it to be Basset however there is no verification or documentation to support same. He married Jone (maiden name unknown) on a date unknown, however he had 3 daughters by the time he left Wales for Pennsylvania in 1690.

George's mother, Elizabeth Pott(s) and 6 of his siblings (Thomas, Jane, Jonas, Margaret, Elizabeth & David Potts) came to the colonies about 1683 as verified by a Land grant of 50 acres each to Elizabeth and her daughter Jane Potts as their "headright and servant land" dated 7 mo/Sep, 12, 1684. [Philadelphia in Deed Book E, Vol. 6, p42]

NOTE: The "s" was not added to the name until after arrival in the colonies; all records in Wales write their name as "Pott".

George and his brother John Pott(s) remained in Wales with their families and their father Thomas Pott(s) until 1690 when he and his wife Jone (Unknown), with their 3 daughters (unnamed) came to the colonies and a 4th daughter of the name Margret, was born upon arrival. Obscure tradition indicates "Jone Potts with four daughters, from Wales, landed at Philadelphia, and settled at Germantown, where she supported her family by her profession of a female physician, having brought her diploma with her. She taught each of her daughters her profession. Her husband sailed for America in a separate vessel and died at sea."

His daughter Margret Potts m. Richard Cox in 1712. The Minutes of Kennett Mtg held at Centre, Chester Co, PA state that Richard & Margret Cox were complained of for condoning & concealing her "sister Potts" as being with child and "making means" that the child was theirs; 1st mo (Mar) 2 1723 they acknowledged the error which was published 2nd mo (Apr) 1723 at Kennett & Abington Mtgs. I have found no other mention of this sister or her child.
