British Army Lieutenant General. Of Scottish descent, he served in the British Indian Army and was also active as a political officer in Afghanistan. He was educated at a school in Cumberland, at Dollar Academy, and at Oswestry, and in 1825 was appointed a cadet of infantry on the Madras establishment of the British East India Company. During his military career, he commanded the 4th Sikh Regiment; Ellichpur Division and participated in the Coorg War, the First Afghan War, and the Second Anglo-Sikh War, and was awarded the Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath and the Kabul Medal for his service. In 1873 he left India and returned to Scotland where he died at the age of 75.
