Juan (John) Alfredo Lugo y Machado was the son of José Francisco "Chico" Lugo y Avila-Rendón (1827-1869) and María Vicenta Ferrer Machado y Sepúlveda (1831-1894). Juan Alfredo was baptized at the Los Angeles Plaza Church November 6, 1868, soon after his family returned to Rancho la Ballona from San Diego. His father died sometime in 1869, since his mother appears as a widow in the 1870 U.S. Census. When his mother died in 1894 Juan inherited two portions of Rancho la Ballona; one 37.5 acre tract where the Fox Hills Mall is now located, and 16.5 acres between Walgrove and Beethoven Avenues north of Venice Boulevard (this is now Mark Twain JHS and Beethoven ES). He married Adelina Mutaw y Chapman at Saint Monica's Catholic Church in Santa Mónica on April 13, 1903. Their wedding photo is attached and shows Juan seated next to his cousin, Ricardo Machado y Altamirano, and Adelina standing next to her half-sister Eloisa. Juan sold his 16.5 acre ranch in 1908 and built a house just down the street that had electric lights, hot water heater, telephone, and indoor bathroom with a tub and flush commode; state-of-the-art for the time. This house appears as the only structure on Walgrove Avenue on a 1910 U.S. Geological Survey map of the area. Unfortunately, this house was demolished in 1980 to make room for a church parking lot. Juan died at his Walgrove home and was buried in Woodlawn cemetery next to his infant daughter Vicenta.
