José Mercurio (Mercurial) Lugo y Machado was the son of José Francisco "Chico" Lugo y Avila-Rendón (1827-1869) and María Vicenta Ferrer Machado y Sepúlveda (1831-1894). He was baptized at the Los Angeles Plaza Church on February 8, 1858. His family left Rancho la Ballona for San Diego in early 1867, but returned soon after his father's death in 1869. He married Rita Reyes y Celaya at Los Angeles on December 15, 1887, and received an 18-acre portion of Rancho la Ballona as a wedding gift from his mother. José saw Culver City grow up around his ranch, where he died on December 9, 1933.
