José Francisco Lugo y Avila-Rendón was the son of José María Lugo y Ruíz and María Antonia Avila-Rendón y Cota. He was born at Los Angeles, Alta California, México, and baptized at the Los Angeles Plaza Church July 22, 1827 (LA Baptism 00075, ECPP). Since he had an older brother also named José, he was called "Chico." He became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. A few months after California became a State he was arrested in March 1851 and charged with murder, along with his younger brother Francisco de Paula "Menito" Lugo and Mariano Elisalde. The trial caused quite a sensation and eventually resulted in an acquittal of all three defendants. Showing that justice already had its price in American California, Chico's grandfather, Antonio María Lugo y Martínez, paid attorney Joseph Lancaster Brent the sum of $20,000 in gold to successfully defend his grandsons. Chico married María Vicenta Ferrer Machado y Sepúlveda at the Los Angeles Plaza Church September 17, 1853, and moved onto his father-in-law's Rancho la Ballona. He briefly relocated his family to San Diego County early in 1867, but had returned to Rancho la Ballona by November 1868, the time of his son Juan Alfredo's baptism. He died sometime in 1869 prior to his daughter Francisca Erlinda's birth in October.
