William McBride enlisted in the Missouri Confederate Infantry Company "B" Hunter's 8th Missouri Regiment in 1862. William was captured after the battle at Helena, Arkansas. He stayed at St. Louis Military prison, and a year at Camp Chase, Ohio before being incarcerated on a deplorable island in the middle of the Delaware river, called Ft Delaware. It was the most terrible of the northern prison camps because they were exposed to the elements and it flooded seasonally... He was finally released in a prisoner exchange actually about the time that President Lincoln was assassinated. He was shipped down to New Orleans where he was released.
