Mr. Harold Hartzell Houck, 77, of 3104 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, at his home.
Born May 26, 1922, in Woodsboro, he was a son of the late Ira G. and Beulah Smith Houck.

Mr. Houck was a graduate of Frederick High School, Class of 1939; Hagerstown Business College; and the University of Maryland, Class of 1950.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army in the Signal Corps and Infantry in Europe.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Woodsboro, and a board member of the State of Maryland Credit Union.

Mr. Houck was employed by the State of Maryland Department of Personnel as a personnel examiner for 46 years, retiring in June 1996. After retirement, he continued as an active volunteer in the same department until the time of his death.

He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed square dancing, bowling and ping-pong.

Surviving are one sister, Phyllis H. Smith of Walkersville; two brothers, Kenneth S. Houck and wife G. Lorraine of Woodsboro, and Marvin Houck and wife Vivian of Walkersville; four nieces, Jacquelyn DeWitt, Jane Stitely, Karen Bowers and Lisa Hannibal; two nephews, K. George Houck and Dwight D. Smith; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.
