Buck was a graduate of Walkersville High School and Hagerstown Business College. He was a gifted baseball player. At the age of 13, he began playing ball in the Maryland State League with the Woodsboro team. He was then drafted into the minor leagues and played with such notable players as Yogi Berra, Jackie Robinson and Tommy Lasorda.
Among the teams he played for were the Philadelphia Athletics and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
