JOHN FRANKLIN ALLEN
Franklin was born, like his brothers and sisters, in the family home of the time at 819 East Fifth Street in Galena.
He attended the Galena schools, and after graduating from Galena High School, he went to Manhattan, Kansas, where he attended Kansas State Agricultural College. While he was in attendance, his mother and father arranged for a second residence there so that all the children would continue to be cared for while attending school. They traveled home to Galena to visit their father for all the holidays and vacations.
Franklin loved to travel. When he was 22, in 1925, he and his brother Mitchell took a road trip to California in a car he and Mitch had cobbled together from a $60 purchase, working at odd jobs along the way to pay for the trip.
Franklin became a mining engineer, then became involved in road construction and traveled far and wide, even engaging in work in South America.
Marriages:
A photo existed in the photo archives of Eula and Frank Pickett that was labeled by Eula: "Franklin Allen and Helen Walton, married June 16, 1927". No more is known about that marriage.
On June 21st of 1947, in Pittsburg, Kansas, he married a local Galena woman, Gertrude Helen Braun, daughter of George and Oro (Brown) Braun. She had served in World War II as a U. S. Army nurse, having gotten her nursing credentials from St. John's hospital in Joplin, Missouri, and having seen service in the Pacific theatre. Franklin had recently returned from 2 years in Caracas, Venezuela, and the couple planned to leave in the following month for South America where Franklin was to be employed. An article in a July newspaper noted that Franklin had been hired as a consulting engineer to draw up plans for resurfacing the streets in Galena, so perhaps Franklin and Gertrude did not make the trip to South America. Franklin and Gertrude divorced at some point in the future. Gertrude died on July 28, 1970 in Joplin, Missouri.
Franklin later married Belle Smith (which was a married name), and they lived in Pineville, McDonald County, Missouri. Belle died February 3, 1979 in Pineville.

Franklin also loved photography, as did his father. He annotated many of his photos with the type of camera used for the photo, and many of the family photos treasured today are labeled with his initials JFA, and notations. His contribution to family history, and his care for and love of his extended family is much cherished today. He is missed.

Mr. Allen was born July 27, 1903, at Galena. He had lived for two years in Wichita, moving from Pineville, Mo.
He was employed as a highway construction superintendent by Koss Construction Co., Des Moines, Iowa, and by the Army Corps of Engineers in connection with its construction of highways in other countries. He last worked 15 years ago. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two brothers, G.M. Allen, Wichita, and Bart V. Allen, Chattanooga, Tenn., and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Heinz, Lee's Summit, Mo.
Graveside services, under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hillcrest Cemetery. The Rev. Allen D. Polen will officiate.
The body will lie in state Sunday night at the funeral home.
