Mrs. M.C. Power; Was Mother of WWII Hero

Margaret C. (Gilmartin) Power, 91, formerly of 38 Bellingham Road, died Saturday in Shrewsbury Nursing Home.
She was the wife of George F. Power, a Worcester policeman who died in 1967.
She also was the mother of Marine Lt. John V. Power, who was killed in action in the South Pacific during World War II. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration for gallantry in action. He was the only Worcester native to receive that decoration in either World War.
On August 30, 1944, Mrs. Power received her son's Medal of Honor from President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
A U.S. Navy destroyer was commissioned in Lt. Power's honor on Sept. 13, 1945. Mr. and Mrs. Power attended the christening ceremony of the USS John V. Power in Boston.
In 1947 a monument honoring Lt. Power was dedicated on the Franklin Street side of City Hall.
Mrs. Power is survived by two daughters, Mary M. Chandley of Shrewsbury and Patricia A., wife of John J. Rose of Worcester; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was born in Worcester, daughter of John T. and Katherine (Long) Gilmartin, and lived here all her life.
The funeral will be held tomorrow from the John J. Fay Funeral Home, 2 Woodland St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 44 Fales St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
There are no calling hours. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
