Pioneer Dry Goods Merchant Is Dead
Charles Adams, 83, well-known Topeka pioneer dry goods merchant, died Monday at his home, following a brief illness.
Adams was born in St. Joseph, Mo., June 25, 1858, and had been a resident of Topeka for the past seventy-five years. Adams was formerly a member of the Mills, Flower and Adams Dry Goods Company, which later became the Mills-Adams Dry Goods Company. After a few years he opened the first ready-to-wear clothing store for women in Topeka.
Adams later sold this business to the Warren M. Crosby Company and joined that firm as secretary and treasurer, a position which he held for twenty-five years.
He was an active member of the Central Congregational Church, serving as the chairman of trustees for many years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, No. 17, and Scottish Rite bodies.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Adams Spear, of the home; four sons, Clyde M. Adams, Detroit, Mich.; Charles W. Adams, Kansas City, Mo.; Will A. Adams, also of Kansas City, Mo., and Kenneth M. Adams, Albuquerque, N.M.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary.
