John "Jack" Finigan, 73,of Springfield passed away January 26, 2001 at St. John's Hospice. He was born June 23, 1927 the son of Clifford and Anna Kemner Finigan in Quincy, IL. He later married Mary Pizzuto July 29, 1954 in Sandoval, IL.

Mr. Finigan attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, Quincy College and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 - 1946. He then became a teacher and basketball coach at Odin High School from 1950 - 1954. He was an Athletic Director at Cathedral Boys High School, where he also taught History, coached baseball, basketball and football from 1954 - 1959. He then became a saleman and worked for Goodyear, A.W. Sikking Company, C.A. Dawson Company and then retired from Paul Tick Liquor Company in 1996.

Mr. Finigan was a Sports Hall of Fame Member at Quincy University, St. Ambrose College and Quincy Notre Dame High School. At Quincy Notre Dame High School he made the All State Football Team as a quarterback in 1944. He was a minor league baseball player in the St. Louis Cardinals Organization.

He had been a coach, manager, and officer in various Springfield Youth Baseball Leagues since 1963, including Springfield Khoury League and Fairview Youth Athletic Association. He also coached in Springfield elementary schools basketball programs and Springfield Recreation Department baseball, basketball and softball leagues. He also was a basketball and football referee and baseball umpire at the High School and Collegiate levels.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jim Finigan; a sister. Marjorie Broderick; a grandson, Matthew Goldbranson.

He is survived by his wife: Mary Finigan; two sons and three daughters; two sisters, Rosemary Werneth and Bernetta Greifer; ten grandchildren.

Funeral Mass at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail conducting Military Honors.
