Wading into a treacherous portion of the Scioto River at the bend just west of the Bridge Street bridge, Robert Thatcher, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Thatcher, slipped beyond his depth and was drowned Saturday, August 18, 1928, at 2 p.m. The body was recovered Sunday morning at 9:50 o'clock when it lodged against a wire fence that had been stretched several hundred feet below the accident.

Young Thatcher had been in the city park at the carnival Saturday afternoon, where he met two friends, Lloyd Williams and Willard Ault. They decided to go swimming and agreed to meet at the river. When Williams and Ault arrived, Thatcher was already stripped and ready to go in. Williams yelled at him warning him not to go in there as the water was too deep and Thatcher could not swim, but Thatcher went out and went beyond his depth.

His companions then summoned aid, and in a short time there were many volunteers, including about a dozen members of the Red Cross Life Saving Corps diving for the body and dragging the river with grappling hooks. A number of the workers stayed at the scene of the accident all during the night and until the body was found in the morning.

Robert Thatcher was born in this city March 28, 1916, the son of Pearl and Blanche Davis Thatcher. He is survived by his parents; one brother, Harold; and three sisters, Ruth, Bernice, and Marian.

The funeral service will be held from the residence, 24 South Sugar Street, at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, with Rev. Deemer officiating. Interment will be made in Greenlawn Cemetery.
