Henri Camiel Fiems, the fourth of seven children, was born to Joannes Fiems and Leonie DeVrieze in Oostkamp, Belgium. While his older brothers Camiel Alois Fiems and Achiel Josephus Fiems both migrated to the United States in 1912, Henri and his other older brother Romanus Josephus Fiems both enlisted in the fighting of World War I. Romanus was killed in fighting May 1916 in Hoogstade, Belgium. Henri, instead, died in a French military hospital for civilian prisoners of was in Sedan from wounds sustained in battle.
