(1921 - 1997)

Edward R. Steckmesser, age 76, of 1008 N. 16th St., Manitowoc, died Thursday, December 25, 1997, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

It was Mr. Steckmesser's wish to be cremated and to have Private Memorial Services for his family only.

He was born April 21, 1921, in Manitowoc, son of the late Kurt and Anita Koenig Steckmesser. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1939 and from the University of Virginia in 1948, receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business. Ed served with the United States Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. In 1944, he married Shirley C. Tessier in New Orleans, La. For 34 years he was employed by the Mirro corporation retiring in 1983. His memberships include Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, Lakeshore Sports Hall of Fame, and the Manitowoc Optimist Club. He currently was the Manitowoc City Harbor Commissioner. He had served as an alderman for the City of Manitowoc for 39 years, and as Lieutenant Governor for the Manitowoc Optimist Club. Ed enjoyed many activities including bowling and fishing at his cottage in upper Michigan. He also loved to watch his three granddaughters play basketball.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; two children, Bradd (Kim) Steckmesser, Manitowoc, Beth (Jeff) Ahrndt, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Kristin, Laura and Kerri Steckmesser, Sonda and John Ahrndt; one brother, Roy Steckmesser, Panama City, Fla.; one sister, Lorraine (Glenn) Garvey, Oconto; one sister-in-law, Darlene Steckmesser, Manitowoc; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Paul Steckmesser.

Memorials in Mr. Steckmesser's name would be appreciated to Immanueal Ev. Lutheran Church.

The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, Manitowoc, assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
