George was educated at Queen's College in Birmingham. After qualifying, he held the post of House Surgeon at Queen's Hospital in Birmingham. He then became a ship's surgeon visiting places such as Napal and India. When he returned to England, he married and settled in a medical practice at Kenilworth in partnership with his uncle, William Bodington. In 1866 he moved Middlesbrough-on-Tees where he was Surgeon to the North Riding Infirmary, and to Saltburn. Here he remained until when he was asked to take on the management of a private asylum which his father had established at Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham.

There, he took a leading part in establishing the Birmingham Medical Institute, of which he was an early President. He was also President of the Birmingham and Midland Branch of the British Medical Association in 1876.

When his second wife Ann's health began to fail, George sold the asylum and moved his family to Canada. They lived for a year in Vancouver, British Columbia, eventually settling in the Fraser Valley area in British Columbia, where he began farming and opened a medical practice. The family was totally unsuited for the farming way of life. In 1895, George was appointed as Medical Superintendent of the new Provincial Asylum, New Westminster, BC. and the family moved there. The asylum was a huge success under his management and he retired in 1901, after 6 years in the position. His second wife Ann had died in 1897, so George return to England and eventually settled in Paris, where his son, Mr Oliver Bodington, was well known lawyer. George died at the Dubois Hospital, Paris, France.
