Saint John Daily Sun, Thu 05 Dec 1895: "Alfred H. DEMILL, A.M., died at the Clifton House at an early hour Wednesday morn. The deceased was stricken with paralysis of the brain about a week ago, at which time he lost consciousness from which he never recovered. Mr. DeMill was the third s/o late Nathan S. DEMILL, wh was successful in business in this city, and active temperance man and one of the foremost men in the Baptist denomination. He was born in St. John about 55 years ago, graduated from Acadia college, where he also took his A.M. and began the practice of law about the year 1864. He had travelled considerably in Europe on two or three occasions. He spent a great deal of his time in study and was a man of a quiet and gentle disposition. He lectured frequently in the old Institute lecture course and has read papers before the Historical Society. Mr. DeMill was figured as a poet and often during political campaigns wrote many amusing and clever verses which received prominence at that time. Mr. Mills was for many years a member of the Episcopal denomination and at the time of his death was a vestryman of Trinity Church. He was also a member of the Albion lodge of Freemasons. Mr. DeMill's legal practice was a purely office one. For a number of years he acted as secretary of the board of school trustees of the Beaconsfield school district. The late Prof. James DEMILL, the well known author and the late Rev. E.B. DEMILL were brothers of the deceased. Two brothers, Arthur DEMILL of Boston and Fred DEMILL of this city and three sisters, Mrs. McVANE wife of Prof. McVANE of Harvard; Mrs. BURPEE of Ottawa and Miss Eliza DEMILL of this city, survive him." - Source: Daniel F Johnson's New Brunswick Newspaper Vital Statistics.
