Justus was born and raised on his family's farm in Azailia, Michigan. He was a farmer until he married Kathleen Ader in 1934, and they moved to Detroit.
Justus never lost his love for a country lifestyle. In 1940 he moved his family to Romulus where he built a small house on a 1-acre lot. He filled his property with a very large vegetable garden, a dozen apple trees, 3 pear trees, a long grapevine, a large red raspberry patch, a strawberry patch, raised and sold rabbits, and had a small hen house with 7-10 hens.
Justus prepared all holiday dinners. He was an excellent from-scratch-cook, and baker of homemade bread. He shared vegetables from the garden, apples, and bread with his neighbors that were in need.
Justus loved fishing, socializing, and all holidays. He was a master Christmas Tree decorator' and gift wraper.
Justus enjoyed making chocolate malts to drink while watching his favorite television shows: Bonanza, Bat Masterson, and Have Gun Will Travel. His favorite candy was Reeses Peanut Butter Cups that he enjoyed eating , with a chocolate malt, while watching his favorite TV shows.
In his youth, and young adult years, Justus had "carrot top" bright red hair, and so many freckles that his older brothers nicknamed him "Dotty".
Justus was employed by Ford Motor Company Stamping Plant in Dearborn, Michigan as a machine operator from 1935 until he passed away in 1966.
Justus became terminally ill with acute leukemia during Autumn 1965. Upon this diagnosis he was admitted to University of Michigan Hospital Cancer Center where he remained until he passed away 11 weeks later.
