First wife Kathryn Lois Foss Ahrendt was a secretary with the U.S. Government for the National Weather Service. She and James Harold Ahrendt had five children together. In his 2nd marriage to Alma Mildred Hesseltine he had an additional eight children, for a grand total of 13 children.
During his 2nd marriage James H. Ahrendt became actively involved with the Grace Brethren Church in Spokane. While in Washington, he worked various jobs, primarily selling chemical fertilizers, but in the years leading up to his retirement he worked at a gas station, custodian of the neighborhood school, salesman at a furniture store. He also enjoyed coming up with inventions. At one time he invented a carbon arc furnace to make gemstones. He patented it and sold to Edmonds Scientific supply, but nothing noteworthy came from it. He enjoyed coming up with inventions. Another invention was a process for extracting platinum from iron filings found in sand. This idea came to him when he discovered that the Mt. St. Helen's ash had platinum in it.
He had a major hernia operation and took early disability retirement at age 62. He passed away on 24 July 2001 from prostrate cancer.
