Richard Albert Popp was born to Solomon Popp and Mollie Scheck Popp on March 4, 1925 in Wheatland Township, Barton County, Kansas. He was the oldest of six children.
Some of Richard's fondest memories include spending lots of time helping his uncles on their farms. Richard was a very hard worker his entire life and passed that strong work ethic onto his children.
Richard attended school in Hoisington, Kansas, and graduated from Hoisington High School in 1943. Soon after, he met the love of his life, Charlotte Schepmann. They were married on August 12, 1945 and celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary just a few months before Charlotte passed away. Their marriage was blessed with three children – Richelle, Royce, and Chris.
Richard worked in the oil fields during his younger years, doing a variety of tasks, and eventually became a salesman for various oilfield service companies. The family relocated to different locations throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas over the span of 15 years. He and Charlotte decided to return home to Kansas, where he purchased a service station. Richard loved working on cars and being his own boss. After several years, they moved to west Texas to be in a warmer climate – and here they stayed for over 40 years.
Richard and Charlotte were very active in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod throughout their lives. Richard served as elder, trustee, and held a number of other leadership positions. He was active in the Campus Crusade for Christ ministry, the Gideons, and the Lutheran Laymen's League. Richard was an avid fan of Billy Graham and Rush Limbaugh.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte Popp, son Royce Pope, grandson Logan Pope, great grandsons Ivan Gengler and Jacoby Pope, great granddaughter Cora Pope, parents Solomon and Mollie Popp, brother Marvin Popp, and sister Alice Foster.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law Richelle and Scott Gengler, daughter-in-law Jane Pope Meehan, son and daughter-in-law Chris and Mary Pope; grandchildren Shawn and Judy Gengler, Barry Gengler, Jeremy and Jessica Gengler, Kristin Gengler, Jordan Gengler, Evan and Christina Pope, Anne and Kyle Mead, Addison and Lori Pope, Ashley Pope, Lauren and Luke Hullett, Landon Pope, Brenna Pope, and Brooklyn Pope; 16 great grandchildren, brothers Vern and Bill Popp, and sister Velma Boepple.
Mr. Popp received his Crown of Life on February 1, 2022.
