Alfred joined the Army in October 1965, served in Korea and was honorably discharged in October 1971 as a Sergeant. He earned his GED and went on to attend Barstow Community College. He earned a certificate in Administration of Justice and received an Associate of Arts Degree in June 1978.
Alfred married Rosemaria Abeyta on June 6, 1975, and together they had four children. After his years in the service, he worked a brief time for the Sante Fe Railroad before finding work at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow, as a Heavy Mobile Mechanic and leader. He retired in 2003 after 31 years of service.
Alfred was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed watching old shows such as Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Andy Griffith Show, and I Love Lucy. Alfred liked playing cards and going to the casino to play poker. He loved reminiscing about the old days of growing up on a farm in Minnesota and listening to prime country music.
Alfred is survived by his three daughters, Terri Sauer, Kimberly Miller (Jason) and Kathleen Lillard (Kenny), six grandchildren, Jennifer Spiteri (husband-RJ Spiteri), Carter Miller, Brooke Miller, Aubrey Matthews, Arianna Matthews and Jack Lillard, his sister, Maxine Skiba, and his two brothers, Maurice "Gene" Sauer and Gilbert Sauer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Sauer Sr. and Rose Sauer, his wife, Rosemaria Sauer, a son, David Sauer, five sisters, Alice Shoberg, Louene Prokosch, Marianne Holewa, Betty Brown, Virginia Rezac, and a brother, Greg Sauer.
