William "Bill" Sapp, age 96, of Midland, MI, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Maple View Assisted Living, Ithaca, MI.

A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis, MI, on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. with visitation beginning at 11:00 A.M. Burial will take place at Homer Township Cemetery, Midland, MI at a later date.

William was born in Mt. Pleasant, MI on September 26, 1926, the son of Fred and Rose (Phalach) Sapp. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during WW II. On June 28, 1947, William married Grace Arvilla Smith in Alma, MI. They were blessed with seventy-one years of marriage prior to her passing on December 31, 2018.

Bill retired from the City of Midland Water Department after thirty-four years of service. During that time, he also served as the President of the United Steel Workers Union. Bill invested himself in his community as a volunteer for the Lee Township Fire Department and a Little League Baseball coach and umpire. Bill enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. He and Grace spent many weekends going to estate sales and collecting antiques. Most of all, Bill loved his family and treasured his time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by three daughters: Pat (Al) Christina of Shepherd, MI; Kelly (Randy) Smith of Midland, MI; and Lori (Bryan) Cross of Wheeler, MI; eight grandchildren: Michael (Sandy) Christina, Dawn (David) Post, Billy Jo Sapp, Tracie Christina, Jennifer (Anthony) Trogner, Nathan (Brittney) Smith, Emily (Colby) Hemond, and Alivia Cross; nineteen great grandchildren; six great- great grandchildren; sister Jane Sartor, brother John Czape, and many nieces and nephews. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Grace, son William David Sapp, great-grandson Auston James Smith, and four brothers: Michael, Harry, Paul, and Fred.
