Curtis Charlie Welch, 89, of Elk City, died Thursday evening at his home.

Curtis was born December 30, 1918 near Elk City, Kansas, the son of Charlie Curtis Welch and Veta Marie Stong Welch.

He attended rural schools in the Elk City area. After his schooling he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad until he joined the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Welch served in the Pacific Theatre and received his honorable discharge in 1945.

Mr. Welch worked in construction and later worked in the oil fields as a driller/operator until his retirement.

He attended the Nazarene Church.

On June 22, 1946 at Independence, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Margie Ruth Greenburg. She survives at the home.

Additional survivors include: a son, Steven Curtis Welch of Elk City; 5 daughters, Vickie Newman and Janie Winkleman, both of Independence; Ruenae Fowler, Stella Roseann Fischer and Holly McElwain, all of Elk City, Kansas; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchild; 2 brothers, Kyle Welch of Independence and Jerry Welch of Elk City, Kansas; and 1 sister, Marie Black of Elk City, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lois Lou, 2 grandchildren, Jared and Sunny Dawn; 2 great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Kaitlyn; a brother, Loren Welch and 2 sisters Laura Lou McAfee and Doris Burns.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel with the Reverend Jim Wilburn, pastor of the Elk City Christian Church, officiating. Interment will be at the West Liberty Cemetery near Elk City. Military graveside rites will be conducted by a detail from Ft. Riley, Kansas. Although the casket has been closed, friends may call to register at the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday.

The family has suggested memorial remembrances to the American Cancer Society or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and remembrances will be received at the funeral home.
