She was the youngest child of James and Sarah Shepherd Day who had emigrated from Somerset, England. Her mother died when she was only 5, her father 6 yrs later. She was then taken in by the Churchouse and Minor families, moved from Wisconsin to South Dakota with the latter where she met and married Myres Carey and eventually immigrated with him and their 5 children, Clara, Valley, Arthur, Merle and Mary to Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada.
