Merle was the third daughter born to Myres and Mary Ellen Day Carey in South Dakota. She came with her family as a young child to Saskatchewan where a farm home was established south of Foam Lake. During the 1920's she attended Brandon College along with her brother Arthur and graduated with a BA degree. During a teaching career prior to her 1932 marriage she was the principal of her school, a position seldom held by a woman in those days. She lived in many unusual locations during her lifetime, perhaps the most unusual of these was her husband's posting with DOT in Cambridge Bay near the Arctic Circle.
