Elroy was born on December 27, 1918 in the Town of Herman, Wisconsin, to Louis and Erma (Horneck) Rautmann.
After graduating from high school, Elroy served in the United States Army in the European Theatre during World War II with the 4th and 95th Infantry Divisions. His awards and decorations include: Combat Infantryman Badge, Silver Star Medal , Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle East Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, World War II Victory Medal, and Distinguished Unit Citation. As a member of Company "F", 378th Infantry, 95th Infantry Division, Elroy was one of the Iron Men of Metz. On January 31, 1945, Tech Sergeant Rautmann received a battle field commission to 2nd Lt. while serving with the 95th Infantry Division, after which he was honorably discharged.
Elroy married Frieda Klunck on March 9, 1943 at Fort Sam, Houston, TX. She preceded him in death on November 1, 1994.
Elroy is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Diane Rautmann, John and Beverly Rautmann, his daughter and son-in-law, Marye and Jim Owens, and his daughter, Barbara Anderkin, all of Sheboygan. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Scott Rautmann of Portland, OR, Christopher (Rachel) Rautmann of Saukville, WI, Jennifer (Andy) Littmann, Roxanne (Tracy) Rhode, John Rautmann, Jr. all of Sheboygan, Brian Rautmann of Milwaukee, and Sally Hall of Sheboygan Falls; nine great-grandchildren, Hildeminna and Jan Rautmann of Portland, OR, Alyson and Maxwell Rautmann of Saukville, WI, Ellison and Quinn Littmann , Evan, Charley, and Molly Rhode all of Sheboygan. He is further survived by his sister, Marie Fessler of School Hill, WI and his brother, Allen (Doris) Rautmann of Ripon, WI.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Frieda, Elroy was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Oliver and Loretta Rautmann, his sister and brother-in-law, Lavilla and George Lutze, and his brother-in-law, Alfred Fessler.
