James Blakely was the son of James Blakely and Lucinda Calvin, who emigrated from County Monaghan, Ireland, to New York in 1861. By 1871 they were living in Aylmer (now part of the city of Gatineau), Quebec.

James (Jr.) was born about 1868. He was age 2 in the 1871 census, 12 in 1881, and 21 in 1891. He worked for the railroad, as did two of his brothers, and died in his 20s, never having married.

The Ottawa Journal - Thursday February 21, 1895: "DIED - Blakely - at Aylmer, on Wednesday, February 20, 1895, James, eldest son of the late James Blakely Sr. , aged 25 years. Funeral notice later."

James' probate records give the names of all his living relatives, included his elderly mother, Lucinda Calvin Blakely. He has a headstone in Bellevue Cemetery, as does his brother William and his father James (Sr.), but a stone for Lucinda does not seem to have survived.
