Walter L. "Pop" Haley was the son of Frank Ezra and Anna Mary Buck Haley. He graduated from the University of Delaware, where he played baseball and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked as a chemist for DuPont in his earliest employment. He also played semi-pro baseball in Wilmington.
He was a lieutenant in the Cavalry in World War I but did not serve, as the war ended when he recieved his commission.
He married Emma Lavinia Ridings, daughter of Oscar Dunreeth and Sarah "Sadie" Hewitt Ridings of New Castle, at Grace Methodist Church in Wilmington October 14, 1922. They had two daughters: Sarah Frances Haley and Lois Anna Haley. Walter became a chemistry teacher in Lakewood, New Jersey and later principal of Lakewood Senior High School, where he coached baseball and other sports to championship competitions. He organized served in many civic organizations and was active in Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball in Lakewood. He was an exceptional gardener as well.
While visiting his daughter Sara Haley Patterson in Florida, he was suddenly stricken by a stroke and died. In 1996 he was inducted into the the Lakewood High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame.
