Harry R. Bengtson, 83, died on Thursday, December 30, 2004, with Sylvia, his wife of 53 years by his side.
Memorial services were held on Wednesday, January 5 at Karlstad Baptist Church in Karlstad, with Pastor David Ingraham officiating. Military honors were provided by the Karlstad American Legion Post.
Harry Rudolph Bengtson, the son of the late Noah Solomon Bengtson and Olga Matilda Johnson, was born in Springbrook Township (northwest of Karlstad), Minnesota, on December 3, at 5 a.m. in 1921. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith at Oslo Lutheran Church. He attended rural schools in Springbrook Township, Karlstad, and Donaldson. As a young man he worked in the local area and moved to Chicago where he was called upon to serve our country during World War II.
He served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He was assigned to Battery A, 92nd Field Artillery, 2nd Armored Division. After the war, he returned to Northern Minnesota and met and married Sylvia Ann Peterson on May 5th 1951, at the Baptist Church in Karlstad.
Harry was a well known mechanic, carpenter, and Karlstad School District Bus Supervisor for almost 20 years. He and Sylvia raised five children to adulthood with compassion and patience during their many years together in Karlstad.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; three sons, Harlan of Salt Lake City, Utah; Ron of Rhinelander, Wis.; and Byron, of Layton, Utah; two daughters, Cyndi of Erie, Colo., and Vera of Salt Lake City, Utah, and their loving years also blessed them with 17 grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Henry Bengtson of Karlstad, and Larry Bengtson of Shepherd, Mont.; one sister, Florence Clark of Williston, N.D.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Lily, who died in infancy, Blanche Carlson, Lillian Englund, and Carrie Carlson; and one grandson.
