Fred was born Dec. 2, 1934, in Davenport,Iowa. to Lila Hassler Boetje and Joseph Benjamin Schmidt. On Aug. 15, 1953, Fred married his high school sweetheart, Jeanny McNeeley. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last summer.
Fred and Jeanny moved to Utah in 1958. Fred owned and operated several cafeterias in various state and federal buildings in the Salt Lake and Ogden areas.
Fred served for many years as the president of the Utah Council for the Blind and also served on the Governor's Committee for the Handicapped. He enjoyed genealogy, bowling with his children and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanny; children (and spouses), Fred (Kim) Schmidt, Marianne Schmidt, Clay Schmidt, Lisa (Lance) Lewis, Shon (Melissa) Schmidt, Hal Schmidt; 12 grandchildren;sister, Delores Birely, and brother, Eugene Schmidt, both of Milan. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Karen.
