James C. Jones Sims was born on January 4, 1848, in Maury, Tennessee, to Sarah Jane TATUM, age 23, and James William Sims, age 24. (James was undoubtedly named after the Governor of Tennessee from 1841-1845. He later became a U.S. Senator from Tennessee.)

When the US Census of 1850 in Bedford County, Tennessee, was taken, it shows James as 2 years old. With his birthday in January that would mean that he was born in 1848. The census was taken in October 1850.

James C. Jones Sims married Mary Ellen Woody in Stone, Missouri, on May 13, 1877, when he was 29 years old. They had two sons born in Missouri during their marriage. Marion Luther Sims was born on May 26, 1878. George Sims was born and died in 1880. He is shown as 1 month old in the 1880 Census. Mary Ellen passed away from typhoid fever in May 1881 in Missouri at the age of 27. They had been married 4 years.

Note: Mary Ellen Woody who was the daughter of Lucinda (Galloway) Woody and David L. Woody. James' father who was James William Sims' 2nd wife was Mary Ellen's mother Lucinda (Galloway) Woody. James married his step-sister.

Five years after the death of Mary Ellen, James Carroll Jones Sims married a second time to Cordelia Elizabeth Yoachum in Stone, Missouri, on January 28, 1886, when he was 38 years old.

James and Cordelia had four children, all born in Missouri and buried in Flood Cemetery:

James passed away at the age of 80 years on June 5, 1928 in Hurley, Stone County, Missouri. He is buried next to his 2nd wife, Cordelia in the Flood Cemetery in Stone County.

Military:

James volunteered in the Missouri Militia on August 7, 1864, for 20 months. He told them he was 18 years of age, but he was only 16. James wanted to be able to join the Civil War along with his older brothers and his dad. He ended up in the same company as his oldest brother, James M. Sims, who had enlisted on November 1, 1863. They enrolled in Company C., 6th Regiment, Missouri Militia, was was a part of the 16th Missouri Cavalry of the Union Army. James' papers said he had dark complexion, dark hair, and hazel eyes and that he was 5 ft. 4 in. tall. His brother, Henry Clay Sims, was in Company L of the 6th Regiment.

When in combat, he shot a man in the mid-section with a musket and thought he had killed him. Years later, he met this same man on the street in Springfield, Missouri, and they sat down and talked about "old times."

In the Civil War Files of his father, James William Sims, James C. Sims states, "We came from Bedford Co., TN when I was a child." James Sims was born c1848. He adds, that his "stepmother Salina Sims was a daughter of Bill Davis (dead), and I knew her former husband John T. Davis and he died as I learned."
