Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept 14, at 1 p.m. in the Osmond Ward LDS Chapel, with Counselor Leslie Harrison conducting, for Emma Joanna Welchman Hokanson, 94, who died in the LDS Hospital at Idaho Falls, Idaho on Sept 12 of causes incident to age. Burial was in the Grover Cemetery.
She was born March 21, 1878 in Newton, Utah to Arthur Pendry and Sarah Lucretia Kershaw Welchman. The family lived a typical pioneer life in humble surroundings, being seriously affected by the persecution common to families practicing polygamy at that time.
Her schooling did not begin until she was eight or nine years old. She learned quickly, but was not privileged to complete her formal education.
When she was 16 years old, the family moved to Bloomington, Idaho, and in June 1889 moved to Star Valley. Because of thier isolation in those early days, family activities were limited and they had the problems of providing their own transportation and entertainment. When the children were able to attend school, they often lived with neighbors who lived near the school and worked for their board.
As Emma grew older, she was employed by neighbors at farm and household chores, receiving a dollar a week.
She married Olof Julyous Hokanson Nov 6, 1895 in the Logan LDS Temple, making the trip by horse and wagon. Their first home was at Bear Lake in a one-room log cabin. In the spring of 1898 they moved to Star Valley, where their first two children were born. They then moved to Fort Bridger, Wyo., where they homesteaded, and five more children were born, one of whom died and was buried there.
Making a living was difficult there and they moved back to Star Valley, purchasing a home at Grover, where two more children were born. A son died of pneumonia.
They were progressive dairy farmers, and their dairy hear was one of the best. They were among the first to install milking mach8ines. Emma and her husband were both active in the church and in community work. In 1920 Olof left on a mission to Sweden for two years. Emma was busy with genealogical research and temple work and she spent many years in Relief Society, YWMIA and Primary positions, serving 25 years as a member of the Relief Society presidency.
Her husband died June 29, 1936 and Emma supported herself and family by nursing and other work for a few years, then moved to Salt Lake City in 1941. In 1963 she moved to Provo, and spent much time at the genealogical library and temple. In the fall of 1945 she had the opportunity to go to England to do genealogical research for six months.
She remained alert and active in her old age. Her example of industry, independence and unselfish service, coupled with a testimony of the gospel were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Mrs Hokanson returned to Star Valley to live in 1967.
She is survived by the following sons and daughters; Julyous A. Hokanson and Mrs Zenneth (Wilda) Allred of afton; Mrs Jack (Ingar) Gatenby of Provo, Utah; Ola L. Hokanson of Wilson, Wo.; Brigham C. Hokanson of Firth, Idaho; and Wilford E. Hokanson of battleground, Wash.; one brother, David s. Welchman of Salt Lake City; and one sister, Mrs Leroy (Louisa) Bee of Idaho Falls.
She has a total posterity of 214 of whom 207 survive her, including 6 children, 42 grandchildren 150 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren.
