Born in Jefferson, he was a son of the late Ernest Jackson and Beulah Harriet Catoe Bird. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired as a truck driver with Thurston Motor Lines. He was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mamie Holley Byrd [now deceased]; three sons, including E. Joe Byrd of Jacksonville, Fla. [now deceased]; two daughters; two brothers, including David Byrd of Jefferson [now deceased]; a sister, Emmie Pittman of Heath Springs [now deceased]; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
