Mary Clayton Brown was born in Wales in 1815 the daughter of John Clayton and Elizabeth Sline. Her father was captain of a whaling ship. While she was still very young, both her parents were lost at sea. Mary was sent to live with her mother's sister in Ireland. She attended a convent school and was adept at languages. She had many skills. She married Henry Brown when she was sixteen years old. She bore 16 children two of whom died in Ireland. The other children were; John W. Henry, Michael, Mary, Elizabeth, Peter, Julia, Joseph, Annie, Margaret and Hannah. John was born in 1837 and Hannah in 1853 Paul in 1861, Catherine, Ellen. Mary Clayton Brown died in 1898 and is buried in the catholic cemetery at Quinnesic, Michigan. Annie Brown Stack, spoke lovingly of her parents.

GRANDMA BROWN DEAD
An Estimable Lady Gone to Her Everlasting Reward
Mrs. Mary Clayton Brown, widow of Henry Brown, who has lived with her granddaughters, Minnie, Sarah & Katie brown, on West D Street for several years past, died this morning aged 83 years & 1 month. The deceased was born in County Cork, Ireland & came to this country when she was 10 years of age. She was the mother of 16 children-8 sons & 8 daughters, 11 of whom are now living. They are Catherine Corrigan, Canada; Henry, Nevada; Michael & Joseph, Idaho; Peter, Utah; Ellen Sullivan, Ontario; Eliza & Mary McKenna, Quinnesec; Annie Stack, Escanaba; Margaret Atkinson, Iron Mountain & Hannah Atkinson, Green Bay.
The deceased was attack by a paralytic stroke 10 months ago from which she never recovered. She has been a resident of this city for the past 12 years, and was admired by all who knew her for her sunny & kind disposition. Even through her tedious sickness she maintained a cheerful& happy spirit to the very last. Her husband died 8 years ago. Mrs. Brown has 103 descendants, including 5 children who died. There are 75 grandchildren & 12 great-grandchildren. The time of the funeral has not yet been determined.(Thursday, September 15, 1898, Iron Mountain Daily Tribune Newspaper.)

Mrs. Henry Brown died at her home on West D st. last Thur. morning (Sept. 15, 1898) at the advanced age of 83 years. The deceased had been a resident of this city for 12 years, and was a most estimable lady. She was the mother of sixteen children, eleven of whom are living as follows: Mrs. Catherine Corrigan, Kinlough, Canada; Henry Brown, Nevada; Michael & Joseph Brown, Bellevue, Idaho; Peter Brown, Provo, Utah; Mrs. Ellen Sullivan, Goderich, Ont. (Canada); Mesdames Eliza and Mary McKenna, Quinnesec, (MI); Mrs. Annie Stack, Escanaba, (MI); Mrs. Margaret Atkinson, Iron Mountain, (MI); and Mrs. Hannah Atkinson, Green Bay, (WIS). The funeral was held at St. Mary's last Sunday. (Sept. 18, 1898).

(Mary went to Canada in about 1842, settling in Kingsbridge, Huron County, Ontario where the majority of her children were born, where their daughter, Julia is buried (St. Joseph's Cemetery), and daughter, Ellen Sullivan, lived; Catherine Corrigan lived in nearby Kinloss, Bruce County, Ontario. She and Henry moved to Iron Mountain to be near their widowed daughter, Margaret Atkinson, lived, and near Quinnesec where both daughters, Mary McKenna and Elizabeth McKenna, were living.)
