Joseph in Mary McGonigal's book page 120: "In the fall of 1883, Joseph came to the Wood River wanting to be with his brothers Michael and John who told him to take up some land. He took up forty acres of land south of Bellevue bordering on a north edge of that Brown land.
Joe wasn't very much on ranching. He thought being from college he only wanted to be the bookkeeper, but John and Michael only needed help breaking up the land, harvesting and planting. Bookkeeping was the least thing they needed but Joe helped get the big ditch built for the land south of Bellevue. Then he went back to Michigan where his parents still lived."
I find Joseph C. Brown in 1880 in Negaunee, Marquette Michigan with Henry and Mary. He is single and a bookkeeper.
