He grew up on the farm on Harrison St. a few miles north of Davenport with four brothers and a sister. In 1860, tragedy struck the family on a hot summer day when his seven-year-old brother Bart drowned. Twelve-year-old Milt tried to rescue Bart but did not succeed.
After spending his boyhood on the farm, attending public school, then working his way through business college, J.M., known as "Milt" entered the grocery business as a clerk at age 20. He served as Mayor of Davenport in 1870 for one year - 22yo.
At age 24, Milt married 19-year-old Julia Little, dtr of Samuel and Salome Hale Little. She died in their 9th year of marriage at age 28 leaving no children. Her obit says she died of blood poison after a severe illness of three months.
Two years later, Jan 1884, Milt married Ella Mary Foster, dtr of Maj. Charles Foster (deceased) and Eleanor Hart Foster. The description of their wedding in the Davenport newspaper is a ‘classic!'. They took a 6-week honeymoon trip by train to St. Louis, Clarksville, Missouri and New Orleans. Milt must have been fairly successful in his grocery business by 1884.
In January 1885 a son named Charles Foster Glaspell was born, In Jan 1886, dtr Elsie Jeannette, and Spencer in 1891 and Albert in 1894 completed the family.
Milt owned a number of groceries in Davenport. He retired about 1917 and moved with Ella to Seattle, King, Washington, where Charles and his family lived. To a man approaching 70, the climate in Seattle was more moderate than the extremes of Iowa's cold winters and hot humid summers. He died at age 73 of "aortic regurgitation" [Oakdale database] in Seattle in 1921. Burial was in Davenport's Oakdale Memorial Gardens. Among his personal effects, there was a gold watch fob that opened like a locket with pictures of Julia and Ella.
