Second wife of JM Glaspell born to Charles and his 2nd wife, Ellenore Hart Foster. Ella had one sister, Irene Burroughs Foster born in 1860.
Charles was an 8th gen American, grad of Dartmouth in 1840. He was an attorney, 6 brothers all Dartmouth grads, all ministers.
He came west in 1857 and settled in Washington, IA, elected to the Iowa Senate from Washington County, served in the Civil War as a major in Co B, 11th Iowa Infantry, wounded in the Battle of Atlanta 26 July 1864 and died of those wounds in a Cincinnati hospital. Because he was one of the highest ranking Iowa officers to lose his life in the war, the Civil War monument at the Capitol grounds in Des Moines carries his likeness. The Foster line has been traced back to Thos Foster born ca 1600 in England, came to America in 1634 on the Hercules and settled in MA.
Ella's mother, Ellenore Hart was born 1832 in New Orleans, dtr of Jewish parents, Nathan Hart from Poland and Amelia Van Ostern born in Holland. Nathan was a merchant. By 1834 they moved to Louisville, KY, then Bowling Green and by 1857 had settled in LeClaire, Scott, IA. They had 6 dtrs and 2 sons. By the 1860s the family was using a Christian Bible.
