Following a gradual decline in health extending over a period of six months since last September Harmon Rockwell Kathan, aged 78, for the past 33 years proprietor of the Commercial hotel on Maple street, this village, and perhaps the oldest hotel man in Northern New York, died this morning at the hotel at 7:30 o’clock.
Mr. Kathan was born in Conklingville on May 2, 1848, the son of Luke and Freelove Allen Kathan. His early education was acquired in the country school in Conklingville where he also gained his first business experience in the operation of a general store in that locality for 16 years. He next moved to Glens Falls where he conducted a hotel for several years before coming to Corinth in 1894.
Mr. Kathan’s survivors are his wife, Irene Sutliff Kathan; two brothers, Warren Kathan of Conklingville and Monroe L. Kathan of Hadley; also several nieces , nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Mrs. Mary C. Wait, a sister of Mr. Kathan, died in this village on June 19 of last year at the age of 86 years.
The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at the late home, 62 Maple street at 2 o’clock, daylight saving time. The Rev. George Williams, past of the Burnt Hills Baptist church and former pastor of the Corinth Baptist church will officiate at the funeral service. Burial will be in the family plot in the Corinth rural cemetery. Neighbors and friends are invited to attend the funeral.
