Edith M. Lewis PORTSMOUTH - Edith Mathias Lewis, 79, of the 300 block of Saunders Drive, died July 9, 2008, in Bridgewater, Va. A native of Portsmouth, she was the widow of R. Phillip Lewis and was a retired phone coordinator for Portsmouth Naval Hospital. She was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church, the Christian Woman's Club, a Sunday school teacher for 21 years, and was a prayer partner for Alliance Christian Schools. She was a loving mother to her three daughters, Judy Stewart of Harrisonburg, Connie Cook and husband Larry of Shelfton, Conn., and Kelly Hughson and husband Daniel of Portsmouth; and her son, John Hocutt and wife Kim of Virginia Beach. Other survivors include two sisters, Jewell Ellis and Mary Ann Rose, both of Suffolk; a brother Maylon Mathias of Portsmouth; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Cook Hynes, Heather, Lauren and Christian Cook. A son, Al Smith, preceded her in death. A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Tom Potter. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery.
