Edith M. Lewis PORTSMOUTH - Edith Mathias Lewis, 79, of the 300 block of Saunders Drive, died July 9, 2008, in Bridgewater, Va. A native of Portsmouth, she was the widow of R. Phillip Lewis and was a retired phone coordinator for Portsmouth Naval Hospital. She was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church, the Christian Woman's Club, a Sunday school teacher for 21 years, and was a prayer partner for Alliance Christian Schools. She was a loving mother to her three daughters, Judy Stewart of Harrisonburg, Connie Cook and husband Larry of Shelfton, Conn., and Kelly Hughson and husband Daniel of Portsmouth; and her son, John Hocutt and wife Kim of Virginia Beach. Other survivors include two sisters, Jewell Ellis and Mary Ann Rose, both of Suffolk; a brother Maylon Mathias of Portsmouth; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Cook Hynes, Heather, Lauren and Christian Cook. A son, Al Smith, preceded her in death. A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Tom Potter. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Pinecrest Baptist Church. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.
