Richard Young was born in Henryville Quebec, the son of Louis and Mary Young. He served in the Civil War -- Private Co E 34th Regular Mass. Volunteers. He was wounded at New Market, VA, May 15, 1864 and then at Fort Gregg in Petersburg, VA on Apr 2, 1865. During this second battle, he received a musket ball to the elbow that was never removed and left him permanently disabled, as attested to by his neighbor, William Usher.

He married Clarissa Elizabeth Watson Mar 5, 1849 in Stafford, CT. She was a descendant of the Rev. War Soldier named Issac Prouty, from Spencer.

For 40 years Mr. Young was a resident of East Brookfield, and for many years, was a progressive farmer. Richard died Jan 19, 1908. His funeral was held at the home of his son, George Young, in Spencer, with services at St. Mary's Church. The body was brought to East Brookfield and buried at Evergreen Cemetery. He also left a sister, Lucy LaValley (Findagrave # 151679707).

Civil War pension files and the 1870 census place Richard on Young Road, while in the 1850 census he and his young wife are listed as being part of the Jeremiah and Chloe Watson household in Spencer.
