Wertz Tannery:
The Diven family is known for their large tannery in Landisburg, but before they started that tannery, they lived east of Landisburg. In 1755 James Diven warranted 195 acres on which he later built a tannery.(iv) This tract was located close to the West property near Gibson's Rock. James had two sons, Joseph and John. In 1830 the property was sold to Danile Spotts and was owned by his son in the 1880s . The mansion farm was left to his wife who died in 1832, then sold to Jonathan Dunkelberger and next Abraham Wertz.(v) Township maps show the Diven property adjacent to that of the Dunkelbergers. More will follow about the Diven tanners in the Tyrone Township article?
All records point to a tannery on the Carlisle-Landisburg road, over a mile from Falling Springs. This tannery was built by George Kepner. Records do not show if it was built on the site of the Diven tannery, but records show the tannery operated in second half of the 19th century. In 1868, George Krepner was assessed on a house, lot and tannery. The ownership changed from Kepner to Samuel K. Dunkelberger and T. M. Dromgold. They sold it to Abraham Wertz who rebuilt it and operated it until his death. The property was then purchased by Alfred Dunkelberger, who built a home there.(vi)
