Jacob was the oldest son of Catherine Rustay. He worked as a carpenter in the coal mines. He married Lydia Alice Dietrick in 1874, and they had nine children: Allie, Mildred Mae, Anna. Conrad, Lillian, Frederick, Stanley, Blaine, and Stephen.

Cause of Death: Chronic diffuse nephritis, with a contributory cause of chronic myocarditis
